President Trump has given Twitter an unexpected gift. The social medium has become relevant again.
Twitter was in trouble. Share prices were dropping, usage was declining and new users were not joining. The web is full of stories about how Twitter has rebounded. Check it out—if you have an interest in this media case study.
Trump communicates with his electoral base several times a day. The media troll his Twitter account for clues as to what he's thinking and planning. This is the first president who can speak to the American people about whatever he wants to say, at any time he wants to say it.
Trump has used Twitter for years, so this is no sudden acceptance of the medium. Tweets are simple and easy to do. It doesn't require much attention span to send out 140 characters about something. This isn't a political blog, so I won't comment on should he or shouldn't he tweet. I'm simply observing that he is our first actively tweeting president.
Some presidents used a stump or railroad car to speak. Another used radio to speak to us about Pearl Harbor. As television grew as a medium we saw JFK use the medium as no one had before. Reagan seemed to own the medium.
I don't recall reading or hearing about a backlash from the populace about "the nerve of our president to use radio to speak with us." Trump seems to receive daily lashes about the use of Twitter and certainly his content. Perhaps Trump likes the fact that no one can edit his comments.
The thought I want to share with you today is simple: Get on the bandwagon.
It's time to tweet.
Speak to your tribe about what's on your mind. I strongly believe that every leader should be an active user of Twitter. There is nothing wrong with a daily tweet.
Many spiritual leaders tweet daily. Pastors tweet to their congregation. Authors tweet about their books. The Twitterverse is a great medium for communicating information.
In addition, every leader can send a tweet without spending a lot of time to "get it right."
Communicate with Twitter. It's a great tool to keep your message moving.
