3 Things We Can Learn From Jesus About Meetings

Sermon on the Mount
Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (Lightstock )

The key to making sure meetings are not a waste of time is to keep the meeting action focused on specific teaching.

When Jesus called his chosen disciples up to the mountain, "He ordained twelve to be with Him, and to be sent out to preach, and to have authority to heal sickness and to cast out demons" (Mark 3:13-15).

The master leader taught us how to conduct a meeting:

1. ATTENDEES. He called the right people to the meeting. There was no one in attendance who would not be directly accountable for his work in the kingdom. My guess is that no disciple left the meeting feeling as though his time had been wasted.

2. TEACHING. The phrase "to be with Him" is evidence that Jesus was intentional about teaching the men by example. Some leaders don't want their followers to "be with" them. This type of positional leader wants to give orders to go and do. Jesus wanted to transfer His heart for leadership. Jesus wanted to know and be known.

3. AUTHORITY. In another classic example of His leadership, we see that Jesus gave authority to the men whom He would later hold accountable for their actions. Jesus was very specific about the actions that would follow the imparted authority.

Low-level leaders demand productivity yet fail to give the proper authority to a team member to accomplish the stated goal.

Authority must be coupled with accountability.

The most important observation about a meeting with Jesus is that teaching usually occurred. Jesus didn't seem to miss any opportunity to teach.

Any meeting can be improved by a teacher.

"Each day He was teaching in the temple, and each night He went out and stayed on the mountain called the Mount of Olives. And all the people came early in the morning to hear Him in the temple" (Luke 21:37-38).
