Leaders need a healthy dose of training in behavior modification.
It's important to understand why people do what they do—perhaps with better understanding than people understand themselves. If we can determine the tendencies of team members we are better positioned to handle people issues such as self-sabotage, the impostor syndrome, insecurities, fatalism and a host of other labeled behavioral blocks to progress.
Effective leaders seek first to understand the behaviors that limit the capacity of talented people. We lead people, not robotic machines. We can't push a certain button and expect the machine to vend an excellent job performance. Some hard-nosed leaders will immediately dismiss the notion that soft leadership skills are ever necessary in the work place. This type of leader sees the worker as expendable. "Produce now or we will find someone who can."
The leader with a history of high turnover hasn't learned to do battle with the monsters that torment his work team. Rather than stand with a worker and fight through the foibles of gifted people—the option of least resistance is to find someone with yet-to-be-discovered issues.
People do not behave rationally. Leaders know to expect the unexpected from everyone on the team. Listen to your own scripts, leaders. "I just don't know what got into him. He's one of the best guys in our company." The best leaders recognize behavioral aberrations.
When someone on the team is having their worst day, it's the job of a leader to have her best day. I pray for spiritual insight when I see something that is different in a teammate. I pray for understanding.
And grace.
"Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you should answer everyone" (Col. 4:6).
