I think most children grow up believing their mother had eyes in the back of her head. I'm convinced mine did.
She could be on aisle 12 of Walmart and know that one of her kids was scarfing cookies at home. It didn't seem to matter where we were or what we were doing, Mom always had a keen awareness of what we were up to. Some say mothers have a sixth sense. I prefer to call it a "mother's knowing."
Leaders need a similar knowing, a leader's discernment. I believe I would rather have discernment than any gift a leader could be given. I want to be able to discern:
* The needs of the marketplace and employees
* Competitive strengths and weaknesses
* The real meaning of key performance indicators
* Right from wrong as it relates to every business opportunity
* God's perfect will for every decision
We can add to this list on a daily basis. I just know I will be a better leader if I remain dependent on the Holy Spirit to direct my path. Highly effective leaders are not independent.
The only path I've found to discernment is through prayer. Things aren't always what they seem. Open my eyes, that I may see.
"So that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, that the eyes of your understanding may be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of His calling and what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance among the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power" (Eph. 1:17-19).
