Decision making is impacted by our view of time.
The decider must always decide in consideration of short term vs. long-term need and impact. It's not so much knowing what to do, as it is knowing when to do it.
Crisis conditions require immediate response. Time is scarce in a crisis. Decisions must be made in the moment with little margin for research or meetings. Course adjustments must be made on the fly. When a leader is entangled in a crisis mode, the speed of action can matter more than the quality of the decision.
When a leader is considering a decision to impact her organization over the long term, the need for speed is replaced by a need for thoughtful consideration. Time expands to allow for meetings. Alternative paths can be considered. Contingency planning is welcomed. Long term deciding can have long-term impact. Therefore, the weight of the decision requires additional strength.
Leaders fall into decision-making problems when they fail to consider the impact of timing. Long-term decisions should not be made in a hurry. A decision required for short-term impact should not be delayed.
Begin your meetings with this question:
"What is the time frame of impact for the decision we will make today?"
The first decision of leadership is about time.
"To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven ... He has made everything beautiful in its appropriate time" (Eccl. 3:1, 11a).
