Leaders: Beware of Winning

A leader must constantly be on guard against thinking too highly of himself. We must not be moved by big victories or our press clippings.

It seems the nucleus of humility is an awareness of how quickly the mighty can fall. Great leaders often speak and write about failure, almost as a badge of honor. Pride may precede a failure but it rarely hangs around after the news report.

We read in scripture that, "there is a way that seems right to man." It's easy to drift from dependence on God into an independent boast of "I got this!"

Toddlers crash to the floor when they become sure-footed in their own ability. Their early steps are cautious and marked by a guiding hand. Their first few falls awaken the notion that seeking help is not a sign of weakness.

The strength of a godly leader comes from the guiding power of the Holy Spirit. My prayer today is that we all remain fully dependent upon the Lord to direct our paths.

Lead me Lord, that I may lead others.

"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death" (Prov. 14:12).

"Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my concerns, and see if there is any rebellious way in me, and lead me in the ancient way" (Ps. 139:23-24).
