How Do We Get From Here to There?

Quantum growth is appropriate in physics. Leaders should be more concerned with incremental growth.

We shouldn't expect too much, too fast. Effective leaders look for progress rather than a revolution. Leaders have learned that evolutionary change in the workplace tends to have more sticking power than tornadic disruption.

There are a many leadership writers who would claim that cataclysmic change is good for refocusing an organization on a new path. In my experience, an organizational earthquake causes massive slow downs in productivity. It's hard to take a step forward when the ground is shaking. It's safer to stand still and wait for the last brick to fall.

I prefer to apply intense focus on incremental progress. I love watching mile markers click by. If I am leading, I know the mileposts and remain acutely aware of what lies ahead. If we know where we are going, we probably know where we have been. The scenery changes as we progress.

Leaders celebrate stepwise progression.

"The steps of a man are made firm by the Lord; He delights in his way" (Psalm 37:23).

Babies don't experience quantum growth. Little bitties don't jump from crib to commencement. We cheer each step of a toddler. We take pictures, wave pom-poms and, of course, share the moment on Facebook. Every day.

Begin with the end in mind. Make daily progress. Celebrate.

"For He says, 'Precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little' " (Isaiah 28:10).
