I remember a time about 20 years ago when my wife and I would load up the kids and head off for a family getaway. On a few adventures, I remember telling my children—pre-smartphone era—to leave their cameras behind and take pictures with their eyes.
I think I've told every bride and groom in pre-wedding prayer to let others worry about the photos, and to "make sure you see and hear every moment of your wedding day."
Leaders teach the importance of making memories. Good days or bad, remember the experience. The experiences I remember, serve to guide future behaviors. It's that Pavlov thing. I want to recreate good experiences and allow bad memories to ring a loud bell when a similar moment creeps into play.
A few questions about memories in leadership:
- What will people remember about how you made them feel last week?
- In meetings ask: "What do you remember about last week?"
- The follow-up questioning is the traffic light system: What should we stop doing, what should we continue to review and what happened last week that we want to continue with high energy?
- Do you remember anything said to you about your work last week? Keep the voice of your "customers" ringing in the conference room.
- What memory do you have of last week's reading and study? Feed and nurture the memory.
Good memories are worth repeating.
Jesus led all of us with His command to "do this in remembrance of Me." This was a leader's instruction.
Aren't you very intentional about this memory?
