Are you spending your time building the culture that can sustain the vision God has given you?
When leading in the context of a local congregation, you really have two choices:
— You can create structures that produce what you want.
— You can build a culture that will reproduce itself and see sustained growth over time.
As leaders in the household of God, we must seek His heart for building up the people God has called us to serve. In light of this, it is critical to build the culture within your congregation that reflects the kingdom of God and the priorities God has placed within His Word.
We may fall prey to the temptation to believe that God isn't interested in the small parts of our ministry. The reality is that He does want to be involved, and He wants to establish the workmanship of His hands in every facet of what we do. Creation itself speaks forth this truth.
Genesis 1 states, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the water. God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light'" (Gen. 1:1-3).
This clearly shows our supernatural God imposing His will and His desire upon His natural creation. Many times we can settle for the "arm of the flesh" rather than the mighty hand of God. It wasn't this way in the early church, and it shouldn't be this way with the church today.
Acts 2 is the blueprint for what Christ had in mind when He set out to build His church:
"They continued steadfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in the prayers. Fear came to every soul. And many wonders and signs were done through the apostles" (Acts 2:42-43).
As leaders, we must set a course and build according to the divine design of heaven. If we build with His blueprint in mind, we will see a supernatural foundation that leads to supernatural results.
